Power Encounter

Today's reading is from Joshua 5 - 8. The story of the taking of Jericho. The debacle at Ai. The building of an altar on Mount Ebal. Lots of great, exciting stories.
But it begins with a time of obedience and cleansing. A time of worship as they celebrate the Passover. And then a Power Encounter.
13 "And then this, while Joshua was there near Jericho: He looked up and saw right in front of him a man standing, holding his drawn sword. Joshua stepped up to him and said, "Whose side are you on—ours or our enemies'?"
Joshua is nervous. New leader. Land full of enemies. I would presume he was startled by a stranger with a weapon so close to him. Where were the Secret Service?
His attitude changes pretty quickly though when he hears the answer.
14 "He said, "Neither. I'm commander of God's army. I've just arrived." Joshua fell, face to the ground, and worshiped. He asked, "What orders does my Master have for his servant?"
15 God's army commander ordered Joshua, "Take your sandals off your feet. The place you are standing is holy."
Joshua did it. "
God was going to do a series of miracles on behalf of his people. But He does not share His glory. It was important that Joshua demonstrate that he knew who God was. And who he was. So God appeared to him. And Joshua bowed down.
Before God can do things of significance through us, we too, need to establish in our hearts, in our minds, in our souls - that we can do nothing without HIM!
Then He is free to do the miracles He plans to do, and wants to do, knowing that we will not stand proud and try to take credit for what He has done...
